• Water pipe from Montpelier, ca. 1795.
Like many of his peers, Henry Knox loved innovation. Among his papers are receipts for a solar microscope, a camera obscura and an electrical conductor. According to local tradition Knox also had running water in his basement kitchen, thanks to gravity and wooden pipes, like the one pictured at right.Donated to Montpelier by the Maine Historical Society.
