• Wallpaper fragment from the Knox mansion, ca. 1795
This wallpaper fragment is very similar to the chinoiserie wallpaper illustrated on the billhead of Appleton Prentiss, a Boston paper stainer. Knox probably purchased this paper from Moses Grant, a Boston merchant from whom he acquired most of his wallpaper. It was common practice for paper stainers of the time to copy each other’s works. Knox financial records at the Maine Historical Society show that he purchased over 150 rolls of paper from Grant between 1794 and 1803.

Donated to Montpelier from an unknown source
    Accession Number: P-041
