Side chair, New England, ca. 1780
Combining elements of Queen Anne and Chippendale styles,this chair has shaped crest rails with carved ears above a vase-shaped splat, cabriole legs, pad feet and square outward flaring, raked stiles. The embroidered seat is not original. This chair was said to have been purchased from Caroline Knox when she married her second husband, Senator John Holmes. According to the tradition attached to the chair, he brought his own furnishings to Montpelier, and many old pieces from the mansion were sold to local townspeople.
