Portrait of James Keadie Swan, attributed to Gilbert Stuart, ca. 1808
Hepzibah Clarke Swan, James Keadie Swans mother,commissioned several portraits from the prominent American artist Gilbert Stuart when he first came to Boston in 1805. These included a portrait of Henry Knox now at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and of Swan’s son James, future first husband of Knox’s daughter Caroline. This unsigned portrait, in oil on wood, is believed to be that portrait.
