Gilt mirror, ca. 1790
This Federal period mirror with gilt frame and rope and bead molding is surmounted by an eagle resting on a plinth with olive branches. It represents the transition from the more ornate Rococo period to the more austere and symmetrical Federal style. This mirror was once part of the personal collection of Henry F. du Pont, famed collector of Winterthur Farms, and is said to have once been the property of Henry Knox. Unfortunately du Pont did not maintain detailed records of this association.
