• Sheraton style mahogany sideboard, ca. 1815
Henry Knox is reported to have purchased sideboard for himself and each of his children, and this is rumored to be one of them. Family tradition also connects this piece with Marie Antoinette Knox was said to have purchased furniture intended to furnish a home in the United States to which the queen could escape the French Revolution. Knoxs grandson, Henry Knox Thatcher, reported to a biographer that this was one of the pieces (for more information about this legend, see the mirror-fronted bookcase on page 47). However, the Empire style elements probably date it to after Knox’s death in 1806. It was sold to William Stetson at the auction of Montpelier furnishings in 1854.
