SHOOT LIKE A GIRL: One Woman’s Dramatic Fight in Afghanistan and on the Home Front. Knox Museum announces its newest big get! USAF Major and Air National Guard pilot, and acclaimed author Mary Jennings (M.J.) Hegar, with 3 tours of duty, the Purple Cross, and the Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor under her belt, will deliver this year’s keynote address at 2017’s Boots on the Ground on Saturday, May 27, starting at 11 am. Senator John McCain says “Major Mary Jennings Hegar has established her warrior credentials, joining an elite group of American service members who have bravely served our nation in combat. In Shoot Like A Girl, Major Hegar shares her remarkable experience on the front lines both overseas and at home – from exchanging fire with the Taliban and saving her comrades in Afghanistan, to fighting to open all combat positions to women in the military.“ Patriotic music and ceremonies, free lunch provided in part by Tenants Harbor Masons, and free tours of Montpelier including Knox Museum’s special 2017 exhibition Maine Women in the Military: From the American Revolution to the Global War on Terror will round out the Memorial Day Weekend program.
